Creating a communicating brand FOR
St.Petersburg
metro

The St. Petersburg Metro is the 2nd largest metropolitan in Russia and the 4th in Europe. It is the deepest high-speed underground transportation system in the world, which is due to the swampy soil complicating construction and threatening accidents. It represents 5 lines, which includes 72 stations and 7 electric depot for maintance of rolling stock, the total length of the trakcs is 124,7 km.

However, the specialty of the metro is the city itself, located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, which is Russia's European gateway. Due to its location, history, architecture, famous historical personalities, works of literature, as well as a unique combination of the beauty of the surrounding nature and masterpieces of different branches of art, the Northern Capital can offer tourists the widest range of impressions.

The Symbol

The current logo that passengers see every time they go down to the metro was created in 1990. The rounded letter "M" was chosen by the designers as a symbol combining elements similar to tunnels and escalators. This shape is its distinguishing feature among all the metros in the country.

Working on it, I was aiming for simplification, a sense of security and heredity. But I don't see it as an escalator, it's more of a direction and a spatial perspective at the same time. The more rounded shape (without the cut-off base of the letter) fits better into the overall navigation of the system, which has the shape of a rectangular oval. Due to its thickness, the symbol has gained more contrast and "stability", which means that it can be read from a greater distance.

TYPOGRAPHY

From thin to extra bold, Onest is designed as a hybrid of geometric and humanistic grotesques. Onest is suitable for reading long texts from the screens of any device and is recommended for apps and sites. Letters are easily distinguished even in small sizes, so they can be used in interface elements or navigation. Several character sets have been developed for a range of closed and semi-closed apertures, allowing the combination of characters depending on the goal.

AI GUIDE

Referring to my introduction, you can see that the St. Petersburg metro is not only a transportation system that unites the city but also a "guide" who can always show the right direction and tell you about the nearest places.

A guide is a person who leads a group along some sightseeing route and gives information about the whole route and the objects encountered along the way. Peter is built on the image of Peter the Great, who is the most recognizable character historically associated with the city.
